goat weed

croton capitatus of the family euphorbiaceae.

the usda plant database calls the common name 'hogwort,' George Dukes calls it goat weed. Dukes goes further to say that the reason for the name is when the plant is crushed it will release a pungent oder akin to the smell of a billie goat. this specimen was photographed at Mule Jail, in Jackson Mississippi.
