ironweed

vernonia noveboracensis, of the asteraceae family, found here in Jackson, MS:

this is an example of a disk flower that is lacking ray flowers. this variation is found in some of the sunflower family. it turns out, what are often assumed to be petals on sunflowers are actually each individual flowers termed "ray flowers" as they shot out like rays from the head of the sunflower. on the other hand, the sunflower's face has many tubular flower dubbed "disc flowers" due to the fact they are found on the disc of the sunflower head.

to illustrate this point better, refer to the post on this page giant sunflower for a view of both ray and disc flowers.

a note on the name, the USDA indicates that this plant isn't in Mississippi, however, the fine print says that the states indicated only demonstrate where the plant has be documented and are by no means exclusive. they go further to state that they want people who are looking for plants to send in documentations concerning when and where the plants the find are located to the express end that they can get a more accurate grasp of the extent of distribution/track the expansion of various plant species.
