climbing dogbane

This is Trachelospermum difforme of the family apocynaceae:

A native vine, this little flower tends to blend into the surroundings. It's about the size of a quarter lengthwise and its face is about the size of a nickel. the fact that it is a pale green doesn't help matters. This is a late spring early/summer bloom and was captured on April 28, 2007.

bigleaf periwinkle

here is vinca major of the family apocynaceae:

this plant was introduced and is considered a pest/invasive species here in North America. this picture was taken in january of this year in Belhaven neighborhood. dispite its lovely flower the bigleaf periwinkle is capable of spreading rapidly. it is a creeper where most speciemens i've observed around town do not seem to be intentionally placed.

vinca major usually flowers from march until may.
