redring milkweed

This is Asclepias variegata in the family of asclepiadaceae:

Found at the Chapel Hill property, Mississippi, on May 7, 2011.  This particular plant was growing in a well shaded clearing, apart from the underbrush.  Native to the U.S. and Canada, this plant is found from the Gulf, up the Mississippi-Ohio River valleys and in to Ontario, Canada and from Texas to Connecticut.  However, in the norther states of Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, this plant (call white milk weed in these states) is considered endangered.

here is matelea gonocarpa of the family asclepiadaceae:

whose flower arrangement is a simple umbel. this particular specimen was found near Mule Jail cabin, though it was passed by once before I realized that it was indeed a flower. it is a pretty flower once you notice it, but it does not stand out, as flowers go. this plant is a vine and I've only seen it creeping along the ground. this bloom was captured in May of 2009, but I have not noticed any since then.

honeyvine milkweed

here is cynanchum laeve of the family asclepiadaceae:

this flower was photographed at the JSU stadium in September of '06. this plant had a faint, but pleasant smell, reminiscent of honeysuckle. c. laeve's flower is a corymb arrangement.
