mayapple

here is podophyllum peltatum of the family berberidaceae:

this is a native of North America and is found in the spring here in Mississippi in wooded areas. the plant grows in cluster and can cover rather large areas giving the impression of a miniature forest within a forest. the flower blooms between two leaves about half way up a single stem just befor or right at the bifurcation of the two leaves.
