virgina day flower

here is commelian virginica. it is of the family commelinaceae.

compare with the asiatic day flower. the asiatic day flower is significantly larger and lacks the inferior petal present on the virginia day flower. as to structure, the virginia day flower has short stem segments between leaf clusters. with fair consistency, each leaf cluster on the specimens i observed produced a flower. for a given plant, it appeared that two or three stems from a common rooted. there also appeared to be some creeper tendency in the day flower in specimens found near a small aperture chain link fence. the structure of the asiatic day flower, on the other hand, seems a larger version of the virginia day flower. aside from general size, a key difference lies in the asiatic day flower tending to produce only terminal flowers with many stems originating from a common root. another in the number of stalks per root, which is higher in the asiatic day than the virginia day.

this was taken outside fo the Jackson State University Stadium, mid September.
