giant sunflower

here is an example of helianthus giganteus found outside the neighborhood of Montrose in Jackson, Mississippi:

here is an example of both ray flowers and disc flowers. the ray flowers are the "petals" that extend from the disc of the plant's head. each "petal" is an individual flower. in the center of this ray configuration is the disc where one finds the ray flowers, each an individual flower, independent of its neighbor.
