southern twayblade

here is listera australis of the family orchidaceae:


this plant was found at Chapel Hill. this is an orchid; it is short, 2 or 3 inches tall. this particular photo was taken in the middle of march, though the official flowering season is from april until june. l. australis can be found throughout Mississippi, except for the northeast corner (as defined by Timme).

I think a blank paper, preferably in the color compliment, placed behind this little gem might have helped us see it better. It seems to lose itself in the background. How's that for advice from the peanut gallery.
