field clover

this is trifolium campestre of the family fabaceae:

another clover, t. campestre is an invasive species. this picture was taken in early january here in jackson, mississippi. if compared to t. resupinatum and t. repens the similarity of the flowers of each plant is plainly evident. less readily apparent is the relation of c. virginianum also in the family fabaceae. while the blossom is significantly larger in c. virginianum the overall structure is the same in all these flowers, keeping in mind that the genus trifolium tend to have clusters of flowers while c. virginianum is a single flower.

No, this is not a Trifolium species at all. Because of the tips of the leaflets this is a Medicago species, very probably Medicago lupulina.
