here is hydrangea quercifolia of the family hydrangeaceae:
yet another native of these United States, this plant was found at Chapel Hill in south Hinds county, May of 2007. a beautiful plant that is shade intolerant, according to the USDA plant database. this, however, i am dis-inclined to believe as this particular specimen was found in the 10 foot deep creek under a full forest canopy. this was not the only example in this creek bed, as a matter of fact, the only place i've seen this plant is in this creek. and anyone whose clambered down the steep banks of the Chapel Hill creek can attest the copious amount of shade to be found there.
