white violet

here is viola primulifolis of the family violaceae:

however, the USDA did not have listed v. primulifolis. the link above is the closest example, in appearance, i could find. i realize that speciating a plant requires dissection, something i haven't the time to do just yet. regardless of the label that man has applied to this plant, it was found on the banks of the Pearl River during spring of 2007. the river was low and this little fella was growing below the typical river line.

i personally think that this flower is a member of the very common violet that is found around in and around this area and that there was simply a failure in the pigmenting system of this particular seedlings genetic past that turned it white.

johnny jump-up

this is viola tricolor of the family violaceae:

this flower is commonly found in early spring. however, v. tricolor tends to pop up even with a day or two of slightly warmer temperature. this particular picture was taken in march. though i've observed v. tricolor as early as the beginning of january.

violet

here is viola floridana of the family violaceae:

it seemed time for a normal flower and this seems to be about as normal a flower as you can get. this is the common violet, though it is very beautiful. this particular specimen was captured at Mule Jail cabin. however, i have seen this flower just about every where i have looked. v. floridana is native to North America and flowers between february and november. this year's spring round of flowering seems to have petered out already.
