American beautyberry

This is Callicarpa americana of the family verbenaceae:



This plant is most noticeable in the late summer when its berries are ripe and a brilliant purple.  According the the USDA site these are edible and slightly aromatic.  I have seen the berries for a few years now and sought to  find the flower that produces them.  This picture was taken on the 4th of July in 2009 along Mule Jail road.
