devil's darning needles (a.k.a. virgin's bower)

Here is a vine, Clematis virginiana in the family of ranunculaceae:



This plant was found at Mule Jail on September 7, 2008.  This is an example of a cyme flower arrangement.  Native to the US and Canada east of the Rockies, what intrigues me more than the plant is the two common names that I found for the plant.  It is possible that they could be read as antonyms, but perversely, they might also be synonyms...
